Before settling on game elements, I decided to do some research into similar games such as;
X-COM Enemy Unknown (DLC as well, Enemy Within)
Lamplighters League
X-COM 2
Phoenix Point
Xenonauts 2
Most of these I do own and I am a fan of this genre of games so I am familiar with some of the stock elements and features of turn-based strategy games, elements such as;
Grid based combat
Base management
Research and development mechanics
Multiple enemy types
I did have to do some research into the steampunk theme and common elements within it. The research I did do showed that;
Majority of technology is steam / clockwork based.
Clothing as well as social elements are Victorian in nature, meaning quite reserved, old fashioned.
Political strife can be prevalent due to socio-economic differences, rich vs poor, the abuse of political power and corruption.
Steampunk is inherently dark in nature.
To aid in my research, I looked into games and other forms of media that widely used the steampunk theme like;
Dishonored (1 and 2)
The Order 1886
Assassin Creed Syndicate
Thief
From my research, I believe that steampunk and turn-based strategy can work well together as it allows for the creation of difficult and complex enemy types, abilities and weapons that can alter and change any situation. Since steampunk still allows for advanced technology, it also doesn't bar for the creation of things like energy based weapons since tesla power is a commonly used trope within steampunk universes
Overall I think that my research has given me a good baseline to be able to write and design a game which is bring together Steampunk and turn-based strategy,
